Maine Sabers

Originally formed in 1991, the Sabers played games at Sanford’s Cobb Stadium and Waterhouse Field in Biddeford for four years, including a semifinal appearance in the Eastern Football League in 1993. The team featured local stars such as Biddeford’s John Mckeon and Old Orchard Beach star Robbie Hebert.

The team was reformed in 2011, playing games in Portland and posting an 11-2 record, including another semifinal appearance in the EFL.

The Sabers moved to the New England Football League in 2013 and are off to a 3-0 start and a national ranking of 22nd in a recent poll of semi-pro teams.

The team again features local stars, such as quarterback Jeremy Shorey of Auburn, and running back John Wiechman of Bonney Eagle. Joining them are Biddeford’s Chris Libby and brothers Jon and Matt Benson amongst others
